Gender(s)
Gender is a complex, human concept that includes social, psychological, and cultural aspects. It can also refer to sex, though the two terms have different meanings.
Gender identity terms
- Genderfluid: A person's gender identity is flexible and may change
- Agender: A person who identifies as having no gender affiliation
- Cisgender: A person's gender identity matches their sex assigned at birth
- Bigender: A person experiences two genders
- Genderqueer: A person's gender identity falls outside of the gender binary
- Transgender: A person's gender identity differs from their sex assigned at birth
- Nonbinary: A person's gender identity doesn't fit into the male or female categories
- Intersex: A person's sex characteristics fall outside of the male or female categories
The idea that there are only two genders is called the gender binary. This being the dominant view is by and large a byproduct of colonialism, as many cultures throughout history and today have and still do recognize a spectrum of gender identities. The above terms may seem new but they are merely describing long-held human identities in contemporary language. In reality, every individual experiences, expresses and identifies with their gender in their own unique way.
